Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

“This milestone signifies an important step in the construction of this facility and the future services it will bring to our South Miami community,” Robins & Morton Operations Manager Johnathan Peavy said. “We look forward to the next phase and ultimately the lasting, positive impact this project will have for many years to come.”

Retired Miami-Dade Police Major swims for a good cause

All it took to dramatically change the trajectory of Maria Santamaria’s life was a short presentation about human trafficking at Miami’s Calvary Church in Southwest Miami-Dade County.

Today, thanks to the inspiration and leadership of Maria and her church Pastor Alex Sagot and his wife Diana, there is a non-profit organization called Embrace House whose volunteers guide, mentor and assist young women who are victims of human trafficking. Since 2012 Embrace has helped dozens of young women assimilate back into society.

As important as Embrace’s work is, the spotlight at the moment is on retired Miami-Dade Police Major Jim “Dibo” DiBernardo, who will join more than 700 other athletes in the annual Alcatraz Open Swim from the historic prison to the shores of San Francisco on Sunday, August 31st to raise money for Embrace.

Although the straight-line distance is just over a mile, Dibo will need to swim twice that distance to avoid the strong ocean current. He will also face challenging obstacles such as a waves, packs of playful seals and 59-degree water, which is cold enough to bring on hypothermia.

The swim will mark the second time Dibo has made the crossing. Forty years ago, when he was 30 years old, he participated in an event called Escape from Alcatraz. This time, he vows to wear a wetsuit.

“I’ve competed in triathlons and keep myself in shape by swimming 10 hours a week, lifting weights and practicing yoga,” says Dibo. “I’ve always wanted to go back and swim Alcatraz. When Maria asked me if I would consider doing it to help raise money for Embrace, I told her I would love to help. I’ll be spending a week swimming in cold streams in Vermont before the race to acclimate myself to cold water again.”

Maria was Dibo’s colleague at the Miami-Dade Police Department for 29 years until his retirement.

“Dibo’s goal is to raise $50,000 from donors before the swim on August 31st,” says Maria. “We have a Donor Box Page where people can make a tax-exempt donation to Embrace. We’re about a quarter of the way there so we really hope the community will help us. One hundred percent of donations to goes to the care of these victims. Everyone at Embrace is a volunteer.”

Dibo seems excited about the upcoming cold water challenge.

“I really want Embrace to be successful because human trafficking is a huge problem happening right here in South Florida. We’re trying to raise some money and help Maria and her team continue the good work they do. As far as the swim goes, let’s see what this old guy can do.”

For more information about human trafficking, Maria and Dibo recommend watching the movies entitled “Sound of Freedom” and “City of Dreams.” More information about the Alcatraz swim can be found at https://donorbox.org/embrace-the-race.

Famed artist Romero Britto inspires kids with ADHD at FIU summer camp

World-renowned artist Romero Britto brought his signature joy, vibrant colors and message of positivity to FIU’s Center for Children and Families  Summer Treatment Program. During his visit, he surprised a classroom of children with ADHD and left campers beaming with pride and creativity.

Britto, known globally for his bold, joyful artwork, visited the camp to create art alongside the children and screen his short film, The Art of Happiness. His visit offered campers a unique chance to connect with art in a hands-on, meaningful way—one that reinforced the program’s therapeutic goals of building confidence, perseverance and teamwork.

“I hope the kids feel proud of the art we created together today,” said Romero Britto, founder of the Happy Art Movement and an internationally renowned artist who has created an iconic visual language of happiness, fun, love and hope for millions worldwide. “My wish is that they’re inspired—not just by my work, but by the power of art itself. Art sparks curiosity and has the incredible ability to make people feel better.”

Throughout the visit, Britto created customized art pieces for each child—ranging from self-portraits to personalized drawings of animals like dogs, turtles and lizards. He hand-drew each outline on canvas, signed it and then invited the children to bring the artwork to life by coloring it in their own unique way. The kids experimented with bright colors and proudly showed off their one-of-a-kind creations.

“Having Mr. Britto here was truly a gift for our program,” said Katie Hart, director of the Center for Children and Families. “Art provides our kids with an outlet for self-expression and emotional regulation. It builds confidence and helps strengthen critical skills like focus, problem-solving, and collaboration—all of which are essential for children with ADHD to thrive not only in the classroom, but in life.”

“It was so much fun to make art with Mr. Britto,” said one camper. “The best part was getting to take our own piece of art home that was signed by him!”

More than just a memorable visit, the event emphasized the essential role of art in the camp’s evidence-based treatment model. The Summer Treatment Program offers hundreds of children with ADHD and related behavioral, emotional and learning challenges the equivalent of seven years’ worth of therapy in a single summer.

“Art is actually an essential part of the treatment the kids receive over the summer,” said Marcela Ramos, director of the Summer Treatment Program. “We host an art show at the end of camp to celebrate their creativity, and many of their pieces are displayed at our center as a reminder of what they’ve accomplished.”

Most of the children who participate in the Summer Treatment Program struggle in traditional academic settings, where rigid routines and high expectations often clash with the symptoms of ADHD—difficulty staying focused, managing impulses or navigating social dynamics. The classroom can be a place of frustration and discouragement.

Art, however, offers something different. It gives these children the space to explore, express themselves without fear of being “wrong” and succeed in ways that build self-worth. Through programs like this—and visits from creative role models like Britto—kids discover new ways to communicate, connect and feel proud of what they can accomplish.

Romero Britto’s visit was more than a moment of excitement—it was a celebration of how art can transform the way children see themselves, and what they believe they’re capable of.
