Maria Alejandra Castaño: Passionate Leadership at Loretta & the Butcher

Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, has quietly evolved into one of South Florida’s most successful business communities – and it’s no accident. With its blend of charm, strategy, and community, the Grove offers a blueprint for how local economies can thrive.

At the heart of its success is a strong sense of community. And at the heart of the Grove’s bustling downtown district are independent businesses, like Loretta and the Butcher on Commodore Plaza, with Maria Alejandra Castaño at the helm.

By cultivating a loyal customer base that values authenticity and true connection, Castaño’s quaint bistro tucked between the busy shops and other businesses on Commodore Plaza has fast become a beloved neighborhood staple.

“Since the very beginning, we wanted to be more than just a restaurant. We’ve built real relationships with our guests and with other businesses in the Grove. We know their names, their favorite dishes, and make each visit one that feels like they’re home.” The loyalty and warmth of their customers continue to fuel the restaurant’s growth.

    Culinary Passion

With a passion for Argentine cuisine and making guests feel at home, she’s created a fine restaurant that’s a one way ticket to Buenos Aires. Her journey proves that with the right ingredients, vision, and boldness, anything is possible.

Beyond perfecting beef, Loretta & the Butcher honors an iconic Argentine culinary tradition, led by the passionate and determined Castaño. As a powerful woman in a male-dominated industry, she runs a restaurant that embodies authenticity, quality, and community in the deepest sense.

Castaño’s love for food began in her childhood, growing up in Colombia where meals are a symbol of unity and tradition. “Since I was a little girl, cooking has been my passion and my way of expression. And I’ve always been fascinated by how the right dish can tell a story, awaken emotions, and bring people together.”

Her admiration for Argentina’s beloved cuisine eventually led her to acquire Loretta & the Butcher, where she brings the essence of la parrilla (Argentine grill) to the Grove. With respect for each cut of meat and a dedication to using the highest quality ingredients, she ensures each dish represents the true flavors of Argentina.

“Loretta & the Butcher is more than a restaurant; it’s a total experience. We want patrons to feel transported to Argentina through flavors, aromas, and the welcoming warmth of the atmosphere.”

What Makes an Argentine Grill Great?

A true Argentine “parrilla” is more than just grilled meats, it’s a whole ritual. “Everything starts with the highest quality cuts, cooked over fire with patience. Coarse salt is all the seasoning that’s needed to highlight the succulent meat’s true flavor.”

But beyond the food, it’s about connection. “A true parrilla is meant to be shared with friends and family, with melted provoleta, a glass of wine, and, of course, chimichurri to add the final touch. It’s about friends and family gathering around the grill, living in the moment filled with passion.” At Loretta & the Butcher, every meal is designed to capture that spirit.

    Breaking Restaurant Industry Barriers

Running a restaurant as a woman comes with some challenges, but Castaño has always met them head-on with the utmost confidence and perseverance. “The biggest challenge has been breaking biases and stereotypes in a typically male-dominated industry, and proving that female leadership is equally strong and strategic.”

Balancing her roles as a businesswoman, mother, and wife is no easy feat, but Castaño has cultivated a restaurant known for both excellence and inclusivity. “Seeing Loretta and the Butcher grow, curating a unique experience, and being passionate about leadership shows that you can balance those three crucial roles without giving up your dreams.”

    The True Taste of Argentina

Loretta & the Butcher’s menu is specifically curated to immerse their guests in the authentic Argentine flavor. Signature dishes include bife de chorizo, ojo de bife, and entraña, all grilled to perfection.

Another standout is Arroz del Gaucho, a bold, comforting dish that echoes Argentina’s rich culinary traditions, alongside their world-famous empanadas, crispy on the outside, boasting a variety of fillings, and bursting with flavor inside. Each dish transports guests straight to Buenos Aires, one bite at a time.

What’s Next for Loretta & the Butcher?

Looking ahead, Maria Alejandra envisions expanding Loretta & the Butcher while maintaining its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “We’re exploring new opportunities to bring our delicious dishes to even more people, all without losing the signature warmth that defines us.”

Her journey is far from over, and that passion burns bright, strong as ever. “Oh, I believe the best is yet to come,” she says.

HERSH EQUITY GROUP ACQUIRES $16.85M SMALL-BAY, 118,500 SQUARE FOOT INDUSTRIAL PORTFOLIO IN MIAMI AND PORT ST. LUCIE

Hersh Equity Group (HEG), a family-owned real estate investment firm and one of the most active small-bay industrial buyers in Florida, has acquired an eight-building, 118,500-square-foot portfolio spanning Miami and Port St. Lucie for $16.85 million ($142 per square foot). The deal comes just weeks after the $47.25 million purchase of a 230,000-square-foot small bay portfolio in the West Park/Hollywood submarket. The acquisitions, which together total more than $64 million, continue the firm’s statewide expansion strategy, boosting its industrial holdings to more than 900,000 square feet and more than $150 million in assets under management.

The portfolio includes approximately 70 units and 50 tenants across CBS-constructed buildings dating to the 1980s, with average bay sizes ranging from 750 to 3,000 square feet and clear heights between 12 and 18 feet. Two of the eight buildings are at 3904 and 3908 NW 32nd Ave. in Miami, with six of the buildings located along SE Huffman Road and SE Village Green Drive in Port St. Lucie. The properties sit on strategically positioned land near key transit corridors – near Miami International Airport in Miami and U.S. 1 in Port St. Lucie.

    Juda Hersh

“This acquisition reflects our disciplined approach to value-add industrial investing,” said Juda Hersh, President and Co-Managing Partner of Hersh Equity Group. “We acquired this portfolio well below replacement cost, and we see significant upside in leasing and operational improvements. Adding this portfolio increases HEG’s assets to more than 900,000 square feet valued at more than $150 million, further cementing the company’s standing as one of the most active owner/operators in the state.”

The portfolio was sourced directly from the owner, who asked not to be identified, in an off-market deal. Financing was provided by BEB Capital. “This marks the fourth time BEB Capital has provided financing to HEG to purchase a significant real estate portfolio,” said Sean Silverbrook, Principal at BEB Capital. “It has been a privilege to grow alongside them. BEB recently launched its latest credit fund, through which we are actively lending to value-add, growth-oriented sponsors like HEG.”

    Corey Schwartz

“This deal is a perfect example of how our vertically integrated platform creates value,” said Corey Schwartz, Co-Managing Partner at HEG. “We’re implementing over $1 million in upgrades and launching online marketing for the first time in the properties’ history. We aim to bring the current tenancy and new leases to current market rates.”

Adam Weiss of Weiss Law served as HEG’s transactional attorney, ensuring a smooth process through closing. The properties are currently 90% occupied with short-term leases and rents that lag the market by 60%–80%. HEG acquired 20% of the portfolio in Miami at a 30%+ discount and secured 12,000 square feet of condo warehouse product at 30%–50% below comparable sellout pricing.

The acquisition reflects both the strength of Florida’s secondary industrial markets and HEG’s confidence in tenant demand driven by migration trends and small business growth. Port St. Lucie is one of the fastest-growing markets in the U.S., offering attractive fundamentals for service-based tenants priced out of South Florida’s core urban areas.

HEG has an additional 130,000 square feet under contract across Florida and Atlanta.

Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Spotlight Karen Rifas

Deering Estate Artist in Residence Karen Rifas Image Courtesy of the artist and Emmerson Dorsch Gallery

Karen Rifas is an Artist in Residence at Deering Estate and has been an active artist in Miami since the 1980s, working in installation, sculpture, and drawing. Her practice is centered on geometry, repetition, and spatial composition. Early installations featured cord and organic materials such as leaves, often suspended in calculated formations that challenged traditional uses of line and volume. Since 2016, her work has taken a more concentrated interest in the use of color as a constructive and spatial device, while maintaining a minimalist visual language.

Rifas has exhibited nationally and internationally for over four decades. Notable solo exhibitions include Deceptive Constructions at The Bass Museum of Art (2018), as well as shows at Emerson Dorsch Gallery (2017, 2020, 2022), MDC Museum of Art + Design (2015), the de la Cruz Collection (2010), Pinnacle Gallery at Savannah College of Art and Design (2007), and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Panama City (1993). Her earlier work was also featured at ArtCenter South Florida (now Oolite Arts) in 1997.

Her work is held in numerous public and private collections including the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), the Museo de Arte de Ponce (Puerto Rico), The Bass Museum of Art, the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami. She has also contributed to Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program. In 2019, Rifas was selected as the recipient of the Michael Richards Award, a two-year fellowship administered by Oolite Arts in honor of artist Michael Richards (1963–2001). The $75,000 award is given to a Miami-Dade artist with a consistent and recognized body of work who has reached a high level of professional achievement. As part of the award, she will complete a commissioned work to be exhibited at The Bass. In 2025, she also received a Creator Award from The Ellies, accompanied by a $12,900 grant in support of continued work.

In parallel with her studio practice, Rifas has taught visual arts at the University of Miami, Miami Dade College (Kendall Campus), and New World School of the Arts, contributing to arts education in South Florida for many years. A forthcoming catalog survey will document her over 40 years of work, with particular focus on her contributions to the evolving cultural and visual landscape of Miami.

The Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR) supports artists who work in various disciplines and media.

The AIR Program offers professional visual, literary, performing, and cross-disciplinary artists the opportunity to pursue innovative projects and studio work, connect with other artists, and engage the public while interacting with the historical, architectural, intellectual, archeological, and natural elements of the Estate’s inspiring environment. For more information on the Artist in Residence Program at the Deering Estate, please visit the website.
