In front of their colleagues at a joint roll call on April 6, 2011, several members of the police department were presented the prestigious awards by the Public Safety and Advisory Council. These awards have become very special over the years as they are named for and sponsored by the families for whom they are named. There were a few surprises this year, but without a doubt each award was presented to absolutely the “Right” person. Each award stands for its own special characteristics and qualities. The Awards Presented Were:
WILLIAM “BILL” PARRILLO AWARD TO OFFICER RUSSELL RIDLEY
This award in its 3rd year was created to recognize those with qualities of compassion, benevolence, community involvement, especially helping with students, youth and the less fortunate. Officer Russell Ridley was the standout recipient for this year. Quiet, humble and behind the scenes are the best way to describe this Officer. From feeding and caring for the less fortunate, to checking on the members and employees of businesses in our city, Russell has a heart that is bigger than his 6 foot frame. He exemplifies what the Parrillo Award is all about.
“JOE BORRELL” AWARD TO DETECTIVE LUKE PLESA
This award is sponsored by resident Frank Borrell in the memory of his father “Joe,” an International Boxing Champion of 3 countries. But the award is not based upon his athletic prowess, but the qualities of benevolence, tenacity, hard work and dedication. The selection this year was clear cut as Detective Plesa possesses all the above and more and tackles his job with relentless spirit that is recognized and appreciated. “Joe Borrell” would have been proud of this year’s recipient just like previous years.
Congratulations to both recipients for these prestigious and important awards. Next edition we will bring you the “Officer of the Month” and “Bill Lone Memorial Award.”
