Students in Mrs. Tania Gordon’s 2nd grade class celebrated the joy of reading and learning in honor of “Literacy Week, Florida 2013.” In Mrs. Gordon’s class, the 2nd grade students participate in the school’s Dual Language Program, where they are given the opportunity to learn to read in both English and Spanish, and are taught literacy and content instruction in both languages.

On January 24, the students were treated to surprise guests, Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and Commissioner Jeanette Gatto of Sunny Isles Beach, alongside Principal Luis Bello who was also in attendance. Mayor Edelcup read a wonderful story about the importance of staying safe, which captivated the students’ attention.

To culminate the Literacy Week festivities, the students participated in a “Bilingual Book Parade” where they dressed up as their favorite characters and talked about their favorite stories in English and Spanish.

This was a wonderful educational experience that gave the students an opportunity to share their love for reading.
