How often do you use spellcheck when you are writing? How dependent have you become on this computer program? Well, let me introduce you to someone who does not need to rely on spellcheck. His name is
Shayaan Subzwari and he is a sixthgrade student at Norman S. Edelcup Sunny Isles Beach K-8. Shayaan has been an honor student at the school for some time, but this year he earned a major recognition. Shayaan won the Miami Herald Dade County Scripps Spelling Bee in March by “outspelling” 70 other middle school students. He accomplished this feat by studying each day with his Mom and by practicing on a computer based program.
Now he is preparing for an even harder challenge as he travels with his family to Washington D. C. to compete in the National Spelling Bee. The City of Sunny Isles Beach Mayor Norman S. Edelcup and the Commissioners recently honored Shayaan for his outstanding performance at the Spelling Bee. The Mayor presented Shayaan with a beautiful plaque and expressed his pride at the way Shayaan has represented both the school and his community. Shayaan’s proud Principal, Dr. Annette Weissman, and his proud parents attended the ceremony. The entire City of Sunny Isles Beach and all the students and staff wish Shayaan the best of luck in Washington D.C. We will all be watching when the National Spelling Bee is broadcast at the end of May.
