Held at Clarke Recital Hall on the University of Miami Campus at 5501 San Amaro Drive, this year’s Miami International Guitar Festival offers an intriguing variety of consummate performers to enjoy. Tickets for each performance are $15 for general admission, $8 for students. The concert series package price is $30.
On Thursday, June 16 at 8pm the Miami International Guitar Festival will feature classical guitarist Dr. Rene Gonzalez and jazz guitarist Tom Lippincott for the first performance of its 2011 guitar festival. Dr. Gonzalez is University of Miami’s program director for classical guitar. He frequently performs as a soloist and as part of The Billington and Gonzalez Duo which features flute and guitar music. Gonzalez will play pieces by Sagreras, Falu, Tucci, and Piazzolla. Lippincott, who is playing the second half of the concert, holds a Masters in Jazz Performance from the University of Miami. He is on the faculty of Miami Dade College and Florida International University and is a member of the Miami Jazz Quartet. Lippincott will play some of his own original compositions as well as jazz standards.
On Friday, June 17 at 8pm Yovianna Garcia Alvarado and Dr. William Yelverton will be sharing a classical guitar concert. Puerto Rican guitarist, Garcia Alvarado, holds a Masters of Music degree from The Hartt School of Music where she currently teaches. She is known for bringing Puerto Rican guitar music to concert halls and will showcase some of her own works at the concert. Featured in the second half, Dr. Yelverton, a prize winner of the Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, holds a doctorate in guitar performance from Florida State University. He is visiting Miami from Tennessee where he is a Professor of Music at Middle Tennessee State University. Yelverton will play a set of Spanish Dances as well as pieces by J.P. Rameau and three blues tunes.
On Saturday, June 18 at 4pm, The Miami Guitar Trio will play the final concert of the festival. This ensemble is comprised of three University of Miami graduates: Dr. Federico Bonacossa, Federico Musgrove, and Alan Nguyen. They have performed concerts throughout South Florida and were recently featured on NPR’s South Florida station in a live concert and interview. Their first CD is due for release in the fall of 2011. The first half of the concert will feature them as soloists; they will perform works by Dyens, Sor, Barrios, and J.S. Bach.
