The Pinecrest Business Association has awarded its annual scholarship to Sharon Peng, a senior at Gulliver Prep. She was honored and given a $2,000 check during the group’s May luncheon.

“It is a privilege to honor Miss Peng as this year’s scholarship recipient,” said Mitchell Panter, a founding partner in the Panter, Panter & Sampedro law firm that sponsors the annual scholarship with the PBA. “We are proud to support students in Pinecrest as a thank you for everything they have done for our community. Miss Peng’s community service contributions along with her outstanding academic accolades are truly an inspiration to us all.”

Each year in May, the PBA and Panter, Panter & Sampedro award a scholarship to an outstanding high school student in Pinecrest. To qualify, students must attend either Gulliver Preparatory School or Palmetto Senior High, demonstrate a minimum grade average of 3.5 and provide recommendations from at least one teacher and their guidance counselor. Students also must complete an application that includes answering an essay question, provide transcripts, a resume and their community service record. The scholarship is payable directly to the student’s college or university.

Peng’s resume has an array of accolades, including the Congressional Medal of Merit, a Silver Knight nomination, AP Scholar with Distinction and a winner of the Harvard Book Award. She also is the Gulliver Class of 2014 Valedictorian.
