New Palmer Trinity School football coach Rudy Fernandez preaches the virtues of conditioning. He believes that the most conditioned team wins. So he’s making practices harder and more difficult. And his transition from assistant coach to head coach happens right as the Falcon Fitness Center — a state-of-the-art workout facility has been constructed.

“The Center is going to help tremendously,” Fernandez said. “We’re working out twice a week before school, arriving at 6:30 a.m. and eating breakfast after as a team.”

That idea of togetherness is what Fernandez is preaching to his team, which has a big concentration of juniors.

“We’re instilling the mindset of being a team. Every single person has a role. If one person misses, the team gets hurt,” he said.

Fernandez says that senior Andrew Beauperthuy and Daniel Chumbley, along with juniors Blake Miller and Daniel Erixon, have taken the reigns as team leaders. Fernandez praised them for leading by example.

“If you put in the work, everything else will fall into place,” Fernandez said.

Coach Fernandez is also trying to promote the team within the School by watching volleyball and basketball games as a group.

“I’m trying to build school spirit,” he said.

“I’m trying to help them understand that we are a team within Palmer Trinity.”

Fernandez thinks that the team can prove to be a challenge to all of the teams in the schedule. He’s confident on the prospects of a winning season, because he expects them to be in every game.

“All I’m asking is for them to work hard,” he said. “It’s time for a new direction.”
