Spring into fitness, wellness and athletic events

Many of us are guilty of constantly doing the same thing yet expecting different results. This has been defined as insanity for many years; rumor has it that this was an ideology of the great Albert Einstein. If this is such a well-known philosophy, why after so many years is it still not well-adapted? Simple, we are creatures of habit.

While our city is so beautiful, sometimes we better fancy a run on the gold ol’ treadmill. Whether it’s because of joint issues, weather, or comfort, there’s no more common piece of cardio equipment than the treadmill. I can’t count how many of the same people I’ve seen using treadmills in my 10-year practice in the fitness field, just running along for 30-45 minutes, expecting something to change.

This is where creativity comes into play. In this case, it can even cut that duration on the treadmill in half! Give this a try: set the incline at 10 percent. Start off on a paced walk, then go 30 seconds on a full sprint, followed by 30 seconds of an active rest. This can be repeated for a total of just 14 minutes to really get some serious intervals in while improving endurance and oxygen consumption.

Other variations of incorporating the treadmill into some creative intervals include side shuffles, sprints, backwards running and skipping.

Fortunately for members of the Alper JCC Fitness Center, there are plenty of creative cardio options. Expresso interactive gaming bikes, stepmill, stair climbers, Concept II rower, Octane Lateral and Octane X-Rides are just a few choices.
