The Dranoff International 2 Piano Foundation will present its third concert of the season at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center on April 19 at 8 p.m., this one with a jazzy theme and world premiere by a celebrated Miami composer.

A performance for 2 pianos, Jazz Squared will feature works by Gershwin, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans and Aaron Copland. The concert also will present the premiere of celebrated Miami composer Martin Bejerano’s Fantasía de Tres Mundos (Three Worlds’ Fantasia), a new two-piano work commissioned by the Dranoff in conjunction with Bacardi U.S.A. It will be presented by the duo of Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia. The duo has been praised by The New York Times for its “beautifully understated performances” and the Huffington Post acclaimed the duo’s interpretation of Bach, while observing they were “drop-dead gorgeous.” The duo’s rendering of Stravinsky’s Petrouchka has been celebrated wherever they perform it. Ahuvia, a native of Israel, and Ho, of Taiwanese descent and brought up in Portland, are married and live in New York City.

Miami composer Martin Bejerano.

The Miami-born Bejarano is a graduate of the New World School of Music, Florida State University and the University of Miami, where he heads the jazz piano program. He records and tours with the ensembles of drummer Roy Haynes and guitarist Russell Malone. In 2007, he released his chart-topping album Evolution/Revolution. His Dranoff commission pays homage to his roots in Afro- Cuban music, American jazz and the European classical tradition.

“The Bacardi Choice commission reflects the Bacardi commitment to creativity in music – in our being part of a celebration of life, our core philosophy about supporting the arts and our passion for helping Miami culture flourish,” said Robert Furniss-Roe, president of Bacardi North America.

Both the Dranoff and Bacardi are Miami-rooted institutions. The Bacardi family has a long history of philanthropic support of the arts, including helping to spark some of Cuba’s most important popular music. Everything pointed to a Bacardi/Dranoff connection that would be enriched by Miami’s strong Cuban heritage.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is located at 10950 SW 211 St. For more information or ticket information, go to www.smdcac.org.
