The Village’s Celebration Picnic is Saturday, Mar. 7

Yes, folks, it’s that time of year again. Palmetto Bay’s 13th Annual Celebration Picnic takes place on Saturday, March 7 at Coral Reef Park, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is considered the village’s signature community event each year and draws more than 4,000 people who gather to enjoy the small town spirit that occasions like this provide. The fun and family oriented picnic serves to commemorate Palmetto Bay’s incorporation in 2002 as an independent municipality. It also provides 3,500 hot dogs, 4,000 Krispy Kreme donuts, 2,500 slices of pizza, 2,000 bags of chips, 2,000 ears of corn, a mountain of ice, and nearly 6,000 cans of sodas and water—-all free of charge to the public! What’s not to like about that? And since the village has a commitment to be a “Green City,” residents are encouraged to ride their bikes, walk, or take public transportation to Coral Reef Park, which is located at 7895 SW 152 Street.

And while we’re on the subject of bikes, before the Celebration Picnic is the “Bike Ride with the Mayor,” also at Coral Reef Park, Saturday morning, March 7. Mayor Eugene Flinn is hosting it for the first time at the picnic and the ride is in cooperation with the County’s “Bike 305 Connecting Communities” program. The ride will traverse the village’s east side, primarily along Old Cutler Road. You can register for the Mayor’s Bike Ride at 8:30 a.m. at the park. For information about the bike ride and any other Celebration Picnic details call 305-259-1234.

Put this on your calendar… The Palmetto Bay Business Association’s (PBBA) Networking Luncheon is March 5. The Guest Speaker this month is Barbara S. Stein, Executive Producing Director of the Actor’s Playhouse. PBBA Luncheons are held at Christ Fellowship. 8900 S.W. 168th Street, Palmetto Bay.

Speaking of meetings, and we know this is short notice, the Concerned Citizens of Cutler Bay will have their March meeting on Tuesday, March 3, from 7-9 p.m. Representatives from Fairchild Tropical Gardens will speak about their Million Orchid Project. “This project aims to propagate and re-establish native orchids locally, enhancing the beauty and bio-diversity of our environment. It promises to be informative and interesting,” says Steve Zarzecki. “Admission is free. Coffee and Donuts will be served. All are welcome.” The meeting takes place in the Fellowship Hall of the Cutler Ridge United Methodist Church, 20740 Old Cutler Road. For information call Steve Zarzecki at 305-255- 4351 or go to www.CCofCB.org.

Donate books… Read to Learn Books for Free needs books for its program to provide books to children and families who have limited access to them. You can help kids reach their full potential by donating new or gently-used books. A donation box can be found in the lobby of Village Hall, located at 9705 East Hibiscus Street, Palmetto Bay.
