The Palmer Trinity Falcons finished with a 14-7-2 record last season and lost their last game by one run in a division semifinal against Archbishop Carroll. The varsity team returns this year with a squad of veteran players and an experienced head coach, Donnie Harvey.

Senior Nick Font returns as a four-year starter at shortstop and in the outfield. He has a reputation for coming to the plate in late innings and delivering a big hit. Font proved his hitting prowess last season with 21 RBIs and tacked on 12 stolen bases. Harvey says Font is capable of playing any position on the field and will be a major reason for any success the Falcons have in the new season.

Last year’s leading home run hitter is ranked as one of the top talents in the county. Daniel Chumbley made second team All-County for The High School Baseball Network, as well as the All- District squad. The utility player has a strong arm with a lot of power. Harvey believes he will dominate on the mound this year.

Starting catcher Evan Steinman stood as what the coach calls the backbone to a solid pitching staff. He batted second last season and is expected to move down in the lineup so he can drive in more runs this season. Harvey says his handling of pitchers makes him one of the most valuable players on the team.

Another crucial member to the pitching staff is senior Matt Roberts. A big season on the mound is expected from the 2013 All-District HSBN pitcher.

“No player may be more important this year than Matt.” said Harvey. “He’s working hard to establish himself as the ace on this year’s staff. Blessed with a lively arm and strong competitive nature, Matt looks like one of the most important pieces to a successful season for Palmer.”

Junior Blake Miller has been a standout player since joining the varsity as an eighth grader. Miller was named HSBN’s district hitter of the year and has a career batting average just under .500. He also scored a spot on the Miami Herald’s All Dade second team. The utility player has been ranked as one of Miami-Dade’s top hitters for the past three years. Miller also led the team in stolen bases and had 47 RBIs last season. The junior is set to go down as one of the best hitters in Falcon history.

Another strong hitter comes in the form of Jarrett Pico. The junior stood as the designated hitter on the HSBN All- District team with one of the best batting averages in the lineup.

“Jarrett is the team’s starting shortstop and lead off hitter,” says Harvey. “He’s a switch hitter with a ‘pop’ from both sides of the plate. He provides the team with a dynamic skill set.”

Harvey added that Pico anchors a strong infield at shortstop and could be one of Palmer’s biggest strengths.

As a new addition to the varsity team, junior Taylor Walker is expected to add strength to the pitching staff. The transfer from Palmetto also plays first and third base and is set to drive in runs from the middle of the lineup.

Other prominent players include Dillon Jones, Zack Peckins, Ted Fernandez, Justin Kross and Cole Hebble. The Falcons face off against Ransom Everglades in their first game of the season on Feb. 10.
