As part of Palmetto Bay’s annual Earth Week Celebration, Apr. 19-25, more than 75,000 ladybugs were released into schoolyards in the village, including Coral Reef Elementary School and the Winhold Montessori School.

Besides being a popular event that is fun for the students, village officials wanted to show the children that ladybugs serve as nature’s pesticide since they “devour pesky aphids in our gardens” and reduce the need for potentially harmful chemicals.

Other Earth Week events this year included the Bird Watching Workshop at Thalatta Estate, the Library Read Along, the Kayak Adventure, a student poster contest, the “You, Me and the Sea” filmmaker lecture, a tree giveaway, the Bike- B-Que & Rodeo and Movie Night, which showed Rio 2.
