Seven students from the Television Production Magnet at Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts (APMCOTA) in Goulds attended the Florida Scholastic Press Association Competition in Orlando on Apr. 10.

More than a thousand students came together to show their products while displaying their knowledge in student journalism. Out of the 2,200 entries this year, one of APMCOTA’s seventh grade students, Dexavior Smith, received honorable mention for the state of Florida.

By learning on industry grade equipment and programs such as Photoshop and Premier Pro, Dexavior also received second place in the middle school division for “The Greatest Save” online competition.

APMCOTA’s small school environment allows for individualized learning including hands-on experience. Students work with Nu Deco and Florida Film Institute. Touching every aspect of production from writing stories in journalism to working with various software to create public service announcements and films, students learn cutting edge audio and film production skills that allow for self-expression through media in a creative form. There also is a new television production studio where students participate in filming and producing a live stream.
