University of Miami Health System Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Advanced General Dentistry, located at Deering Medical Plaza at Jackson South Community Hospital, provides patients with high-quality care and cutting-edge treatments for a variety of conditions of the mouth, head and neck.

Under the direction of renowned oral surgeon Robert E. Marx, DDS, chief of staff, the facility’s team of highly-skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeons, restorative dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants work together to provide comprehensive advanced dentistry services and a full range of oral maxillofacial surgery care.

Good oral health care begins with routine dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments and X-rays. The clinic’s highly-trained dental hygienists take the time to educate their patients about good oral hygiene at home. Advanced dentistry services are also provided, including fillings, extractions, crowns, root canals, deep cleanings to control periodontal disease and teeth whitening to help patients achieve bright, vibrant smiles.

“Regardless of the condition of a patient’s teeth, improvements can be made to enhance eating and speaking abilities, appearance and overall quality of life,” said Dr. Marx. “We work with our patients to determine the best treatments for them.”

Patients with missing or damaged teeth can have them replaced with bridgework, removable partial dentures or dental implants. In fact, U Health Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Advanced General Dentistry is a center of excellence for dental implants and associated bone grafting, an advanced surgical procedure that replaces missing bone.

Dr. Marx is leading a new type of treatment using stem cells to regenerate a patient’s bone. This high-tech treatment gives new hope to accident and gunshot victims, cancer patients and individuals whose bone has deteriorated due to injury, disease or infection.

Cutting-edge clinical procedures such as head, neck and facial tumor surgery and reconstructive surgery to correct defects or repair trauma are performed by nationally- and internationally-acclaimed surgeons and researchers, including Gabriela Albota, DDS, and Ramsey Tursun, DDS.

Dr. Albota specializes in post-traumatic surgical procedures and treats a wide range of conditions. “We treat patients who come from all over the world – many are complicated cases that are referred to our practice by other dentists or doctors,” she said.

Dr. Tursun specializes in facial cosmetic surgery and microneurosurgery. He’s performed more than 300 neurovascular surgeries to repair nerve damage in patients whose facial nerves have been damaged or severed by trauma, injury, cancer tumor removal or other surgical dental procedures.

“New advances in the field means that patients do not have to live with nerve damage that has caused numb lips and tongues or impaired their ability to smile or speak,” he said.

Dr. Marx added, “Our surgeons not only use the latest technology and innovative techniques; they have been integral in researching, developing and pioneering many of these technologies and surgical techniques.”

The state-of-the-art clinic also offers sophisticated therapies and surgical options to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea and functional growth factors.

UM Health System Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Advanced General Dentistry is home to a physician residency program, operated by the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, and the Jackson Memorial Medical Center. The program boasts a strong academic focus with a high priority given to research and clinical care.

“Our mission is to provide worldclass surgical services to our patients, while training future surgeons to become highly-skilled and caring clinicians, and future leaders of our profession,” Dr. Marx said.

Conveniently located at Deering Medical Plaza, the clinic’s patients benefit from easy access to other medical specialties in the building, such as family medicine, physical therapy, breast surgery and robotic surgery, as well as diagnostic and laboratory testing services offered at Jackson South Community Hospital. Patients and visitors also enjoy the convenient location, ample parking, parking lot shuttle service and security and video surveillance.
