Sending files to Community Newspapers
How a client should send an image file via e-mail:
  • Please read carefully the following instructions and send your artwork to artwork@communitynewspapers.com.
  • The following specifications apply to Community Newspaper. Color, Black & White materials preferred method:
    PDF files send via FTP..
  • We also accept Disk (CD and Zip disks) with matching proof.
  • Digital Material Required: Acrobat PDF Compatible 5.0 Version, all fonts embedded.
Platforms: Mac OS 8 & 9 or OSX

Acceptable Applications:

  • Adobe Acrobat PDF - 5.0 Version
  • Adobe Illustrator 9.0 Version
  • Adobe PhotoShop 6.0 Version
  • FreeHand 11.0 Version
  • Quark Xpress 6.5 Version

Mechanical Specifications:

  • Screen Ruling should be no higher than 85 lines per inch.
  • Images DPI 300
  • A round dot is required.
  • The angle of the screen used must be at 45 degrees.
  • Reverse type: background value should be greater than 60%.
  • Minimum point size should be no less than 9 and the font used should be sans serif.

HIGHLIGHT, MIDTONES AND SHADOW DOT (Velox or Paper)
*Note (For files received electronically or on a disk): Our Imagesetters are linearized. The dot% you set in any tonal region will be the dot% set on our final color film output.

Black and White

  • Highlights should range between 4-7%
  • Midtones should range between 30-45%
  • Shadows should range between 75-89%
  • Allow for 30% dot gain on the press.

Color

  • Highlights should range between 4-7%
  • Shadows should range between 75-89%
  • In the final separation limit total ink density to 210%
Note: Color laser prints or color copies are for position and color ID only! They are not acceptable as proof of final reproduction.
Electronic Transmission: Community Newspapers requires PDF files via FTP, NO E-MAIL

Valid PDF Files

  • No OPI comments allowed on PDF (Images may drop out with OPI comments)
  • All fonts and images must be embedded. No Multiple Master (MM) fonts of any kind.
  • All images must be 300 DPI Color images should be in CMYK format. No RGB. No Index Color.
  • No ICC Profiles
  • Do not use full color black type. Black type should only be in the Black channel.
  • PDFs must be single page documents (No separated plates, please)
  • Do NOT use PDFWriter
  • Open and preview the ad for font, image, setup and color accuracy. Use of preflighting software such as Enfocus Pitstop is highly recommended.
Resends: If a new ad needs to be sent, and time permits, the sales rep must be notified to initiate a change order. Community Newspapers reps will assign you a new ad number for your file to be resent and distinguished from previous ads.

Recommendations

  • Original image files (excluding logos) should be at least 200 DPI* (resolution at final printing size.**
  • * If image resolution is any lower than 300 DPI the final printing will not be clean & clear and the client will not be happy
  • ** If final printing size is 200% times image size, the DPI would be 400.

File type should be sent as either a:

  • JPEG: (*.JPG) Smaller file size
  • PHOTOSHOP: (*.PSD) Largest file size
  • TIFF: (*.TIF) Best quality
  • ILLUSTRATOR: (*.EPS) Smallest file size]
  • PDF

Sending either a Quark. FreeHand or Illustrator file:

- Please have the specific font(s) used for the file(s).The client must include all font folders to insure their ad prints exact to original file.*
* Please make sure that the corresponding image files arrive with the document.

Sending a file through the postal Fed-Ex/UPS system: Same specifications as e-mail system BUT client should have the file(s) saved on a ZIP disk or CD-ROM.

Speed your ad delivery with FTP service:

To speed your advertising delivery on big files please ask our Sales Representative for FTP account. This way our Production Department can get your ad in less than 10/15 minutes approximately; or in less time according to your file size capacity. (FTP Program is required for this process). 

Programs used in the Production Department (Mac-based): Adobe Photoshop CS (*.PSD) Freehand 11.0 (xxx.FH8), Quark Express 6.5 (*.404) or Adobe Illustrator CS (*.EPS) whichever version used.
