Miami Gardens’ New Mayor Takes Office

At the August 14, 2012 General Election for the City of Miami Gardens, the voters overwhelmingly elected Oliver Gilbert to serve as their Mayor for the next four (4) years. Gilbert is no novice to public office; originally appointed in 2006, by then Mayor Shirley Gibson, Gilbert served an unexpired term in At-Large Seat Six until August 2008. In 2008, he qualified for At-Large Seat Six, and was resoundingly elected by the voters. That term ended 2010, and again Gilbert qualified and ran for re-election to At-Large Seat Six.

In 2011, Gilbert announced his candidacy for Mayor of the City of Miami Gardens. Out of a field of eight candidates, Gilbert emerged as a strong frontrunner, a position he maintained throughout the campaign. Gilbert the second Miami Gardens Mayor was sworn into office, August 21, 2012.

Gilbert is a lifelong resident of the City that is now Miami Gardens, the third-largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. Ultimately, Gilbert said he would like to build a Miami Gardens that would attract outsiders and locals to spend their recreational dollars inside the City. His goal is to build a community that is safe, that is economically viable and kid friendly.

Mr. Gilbert’s first position after graduating from the University of Miami Law School, with honors in 2000, was as the legislative assistant to State Representative Dorothy Bendross Mindingall. He has also served as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County. Mayor Gilbert currently serves as Chairman of the Miami Dade County Local Black Elected Officials and on the Executive Committee of the Miami Dade County League of Cities. Additionally, he is a member of North County Citizen’s Association; Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University National Alumni Association; the Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; and Miami Fellows –Class V.

He graduated from Miami Norland Senior High School; Florida A & M University. Oliver is the proud father of a five year old son, Oliver IV.
