‘Champions of Business’ Panel Hosts Local Success Stories

The Emerging Leadership Council of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce will host business professionals at the 8th annual ‘Champions of Business’ Panel Discussion on Friday, August 22nd, 2014. The purpose of this event, sponsored by City National Bank, is to educate the audience on secrets of successful business development. The panel of distinguished individuals that have made recent leaps of progress in their respective businesses and/or careers each have a unique approach.

Jamal Mashburn (2)This traditionally sold-out event, held at the beautiful St. Regis – Bal Harbour, will host over 200 business professionals to witness and interact in a discussion between local success stories. Panelists include former NBA player and entrepreneur Jamal Mashburn; Media Personality, Chef and Attorney Ana Quincoces and President of IGT Media Holdings Ric Roth. The moderator will be Senior Vice President and Director of Marketing, Communications and Community Relations at City National Bank Eddie Dominguez.

Leading up to the panel we will be highlighting each panelist separately and we kick off this series with Jamal Mashburn. The former college and NBA All Star spent over 20years with the Kentucky Wildcats, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and New Orleans Hornets, where he dribbled, dunked, and dazzled fans. Yet, before Mashburn ever set foot on the professional hardwood, he was already preparing for his life after basketball.

Mashburn took his skills straight to the business world without missing a beat. Mashburn successfully assembled a team of savvy professionals specializing in administration, finance, project management, insurance, and advertising. This rock-star team quickly developed an ownership model that resulted in an impressive business portfolio. In his spare time (and when not laser-focused on new investment opportunities) Mashburn even served as an ESPN on-air NBA analyst (2006-2010).

Extremely civic-minded, Mashburn is committed to helping others and giving back to the community. In 1993, before he ever signed his first professional basketball contract, he established and endowed the Mashburn Scholarship Fund at the University of Kentucky. The scholarship identifies ninth grade students in the Lexington, Kentucky, area, tracks them through high school, and then awards them a full scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky or Bluegrass Community and Technical College in the event they achieve their academic and personal goals. He is also a founding member, officer, and director of The MAP Foundation (focused on youth mentoring) and Mashburn Family Foundation (offering programs and support for latch-key children and children of alcoholics and single mothers), both of which are non-profit 501(c)(3) corporations.

Mashburn currently sits on the Board of Directors for the National Forest Foundation and has served on the Advisory Board for Central Bank & Trust Company in Lexington, KY from 2005-2008. He also ensures that each of his businesses actively participate in their local communities by way of donations to various charitable organizations.

Past panelists include Shareef Malnik of The Forge, Joshua Wallack of Mango’s Tropical Café, Lisa Pliner of Donald J Pliner, Alex Havenick of Magic City Casino, and Dr. Arthur Agatson of the South Beach Diet. Additional sponsors of the event is the Criminal Law Office of Michael Grieco and 84 West Studios. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Panel Discussion beginning promptly at 12:00 p.m. The program concludes with an open Question + Answer session from the audience, with the event ending at 1:30 pm. As the St. Regis is the originator of the Bloody Mary, there will be post-program networking with a Bloody Mary Bar in the foyer for those who can stay.
