The Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce hosted Miami Beach teachers, school administrators, business people and community leaders on Thursday, April 24, 2014 to celebrate distinguished educators within the schools of the City of Miami Beach feeder pattern at the Elayne Weisburd Excellence in Education event. At the dinner, held this year at Jungle Island, the finalists for the Elayne Weisburd Excellence in Education Award were honored and the winner, Pearl Chester from North Beach Elementary, was announced.

The finalists for this year’s award were selected by a distinguished panel of judges; a finalist from each school within the City of Miami Beach Feeder Pattern was designated, and the winner was carefully selected from the pool of finalists. The finalists for the 2014 award were: Gabriela Iglesia from Nautilus Middle School, Angela Gonzalez from South Pointe Elementary School, Jacqueline Isales from Fienberg Fisher K-8 Center, Yvette Perez from Biscayne Elementary School, Lauren Perez from Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center, Patricia Haselmann from Miami Beach Senior High School, Judith Arencibia from Treasure Island Elementary School, and Pearl Chester from North Beach Elementary School —this year’s winner.

Chairman and SVP of Gibraltar Private Brank & Trust Michael S. Goldberg welcomed over 100 guests and the award’s namesake, Mrs. Elayne Weisburd, commending her as the first female commissioner for the City of Miami Beach. Elayne Weisburd has dedicated her career to the City of Miami Beach and the education of our community’s leaders of tomorrow.

“Our children are our future,” said Weisburd. “The Chamber has always supported education and put teachers first and I thank them so very much. It’s also important for the business community to support children because one day these students will be working for your business and in our community”

Ceci Velasco, Executive Vice President of the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce, served as master of ceremonies and introduced Aletha Player from FPL, the title sponsor of the event. FPL is committed to installing solar system systems in at least one school in each of the 28 districts they serve. “FPL supports the public school system and has invested in a number of programs in science and math,” said Player. All finalists were honored at the luncheon for their extraordinary commitment to the Miami Beach education community. All the teachers received a complimentary night out at Mango’s Tropical Cafe and assortment of supplies and gifts from Office Depot. Once again, the Elayne Weisburd Excellence in Education Award event was a successful celebration of outstanding teachers in the Miami Beach Feeder Pattern, as well as a testament to the strength of the Miami Beach community. This wonderful event honoring the dedication of all teachers throughout the Miami Beach Feeder Pattern schools was made possible by generous sponsorship from FPL, Pizza Rustica, Office Depot, Mango’s Tropical Café, Dr. Ino Halegua, Atlantic Broadband and Jungle Island.
