gamson-square-west-end-logoMiami-Dade County Commissioner Juan C. Zapata announces the official release of the County’s first community application. The West End Living mobile app is available in ITunes stores (an Android version is also about to be launched) and features information about upcoming community events, featured businesses, County parks, public transportation and County services of interest to District 11 residents.

Phase two of the application project will include direct access to the County’s 311 Call Center, a regional loyalty program, and integration to the mobile application for the Miami-Dade Public Schools. The app is available free-of-charge.

“This app will serve as a hub for community information and engagement for West End residents,” Commissioner Zapata said.

The project is a group effort involving the Office of Commissioner Zapata, the Miami-Dade Information Technology Department, the Community Information and Outreach department, and numerous active community members in District 11, named the “West End” by Commissioner Zapata.

Dan Chatlos, of Commissioner Zapata’s office applauded the app project as “community-driven” and a “forum for community engagement” for the District’s 300,000 residents.

The Apple Store describes the app:  “Welcome to the West End: home to Fun Families, Friendly Neighbors, and Fit Residents. The West End’s new mobile app provides access to the latest information on what is happening in your West End community. By using the app, you will be able to find community events nearby, check out the West End’s best restaurants, locate a park for a pick-up soccer game, explore Miami-Dade County services available near you, engage with your Commissioner, and much more.”

Commissioner Zapata is doing a lot to bring attention to his district through promotional and informative efforts via the app, Instagram and Facebook. The Instagram account westendliving was launched ahead of the mobile application. Also, a number of studies have been conducted focusing on strategies for the District’s future.

Recently, the County Commission approved the “West End Innovation District” an an inclusive, sustainable economic development area bounded on the north by SW112 Street, on the east by SW137 Avenue, on the south by the CSX rail tracks and on the west SW 157 Avenue.

In February Commissioner Zapata unveiled a colorful new community image to promote the West End as a place for fun families, friendly neighbors, and fit residents.

Created by artist Stephen Gamson, the boldly-colored image depicts an outdoor family scene highlighting the area’s unique character and proximity to the Everglades.

“The image encompasses our community identity by emphasizing our beautiful parks, family-friendly neighbors and being a gateway to the Everglades,” Commissioner Zapata said.

The image will appear on all branded District 11 materials as well as on display stickers that will be distributed to West End businesses and constituents. It also is featured in the new West End Living mobile app.
