Officer’s keen sense of smell leads to $13K marijuana bust

A keen sense of smell drew Miami-Dade Police Kendall District Officer AntonioLlaneras (center) to check out an erratic female driver after stopping her in the Dadeland area on Dec. 19, 2013. Detecting a strong marijuana odor, he found a black duffle bag in the car’s trunk that held five and one-half pounds of marijuana with a street value of $13,000. The woman’s male passenger was taken into custody after confessing to ownership of the bag while absolving his female companion of any knowledge of its existence. On Feb. 26, Citizens Advisory Committee chair Barry White (left) presented Llaneras with a citation for his exemplary police work during the holiday season as January Kendall Officer of-the Month. Maj. Christopher Carothers also was present.
