An ultrasound device worth $50,000 was recovered by a trio of Miami-Dade Police Hammocks District officers following an early morning burglary, leading to the three receiving citations as Officers of the Month for July.

Officers Angel Llorca, Miguel Hernandez and Juan Colon comprised a special investigative unit tracking leads in an area of West Kendall “plagued with commercial burglaries,” according to Maj. Hernan M. Organvidez, district commander.

“We organized the special unit to help pinpoint criminal intelligence that has been gathered, yielding many crimes being committed on the midnight shift,” he said.

As a two-man team conducting surveillance of closed stores during the early morning hours of June 27, Officers Llorca and Hernandez spotted a parked Dodge Ram pickup truck with its headlights turned off at the rear of Jemay 3-D Imaging at 15651 SW 88 St. The firm specializes in providing prospective parents with pre-birth baby images.

While approaching the vehicle, its two occupants sped away as the investigating pair turned around to pursue after radioing a dispatcher who alerted Officer Colon to the incident.

The officers caught the vehicle and subjects at SW 152nd Avenue and SW 81st Lane, conducting a traffic stop before discovering an Accuvix-XQ ultrasound machine in the pickup’s open bed.

While the suspects gave conflicting statements about the equipment, Officer Colon discovered an open door at the Jemay address where a camera and DVD recorder had been taken, in addition to the medical equipment.

“The two subjects arrested are responsible for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in property that greatly impacts not only businesses in the district but residents as well,” the citations read.

The officers were honored for their “collaborative efforts, attention to detail and perseverance” during a July 25 Citizens Advisory Committee meeting led by chair James Blough.

Seriously???? The officers were handed these criminals on a silver platter – no detective or investigative work what so ever. How about giving them Officer of the Month for actually finding crooks with out the help of others. What a joke.
