This fall Florida International University will become the first university in the state to offer a dedicated master’s degree program in disaster management.
FIU’s Professional Masters in Disaster Management is a one-year graduate degree program designed to prepare a new generation of emergency management and international humanitarian assistance leaders. The program will launch this fall and focus on international humanitarian disaster relief, as well as U.S. federal, state and local emergency management preparedness, response recovery and mitigation efforts. The degree is offered by the Academy for International Disaster Preparedness, which is part of the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs.
“Disasters like the earthquake in Nepal remind us of the devastation that a natural event can bring to a community,” said Ruben D. Almaguer, executive director of the Academy for International Disaster Preparedness. “In South Florida we know the importance of having well-trained first responders and emergency managers to handle such situations. This program will provide new opportunities for many professionals to expand their skills in this area.”
Through classroom instruction and scenario- driven field simulations, students will learn the strategies and skills needed to meet the challenges of preparing for, responding to and recovering from natural and man-made disasters in the United States and around the world.
Courses will include Disaster Response and Recovery; Disaster Preparedness and Planning Methodologies; Foundations in Humanitarian Assistance and Coordination; Environmental Disaster and Human Health, and Disaster Field Operations as well as others.
The 30-credit program, which will begin on Aug. 15, is designed to be completed in 11 months. Classes will be conducted on Saturdays, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
