Community to ‘Walk Like MADD’ in effort to end drunk driving

Walk like MADD

In a continued and vital effort to save lives and honor those who have been killed or injured, the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) affiliate of Miami-Dade County is welcoming the community to take part in the fifth installment of its signature fundraiser, Walk Like MADD and MADD Dash, a certified 5K walk and 5K run for friends and families.

Every year, according to national statistics, more than 10,400 people die in drunk driving crashes, and 350,000 people are injured. The Walk Like MADD/MADD Dash event, which takes place Sunday, Feb. 8, from 7:30 a.m. until noon at Tropical Park in Kendall, also will include a festival with food and games. Title sponsors include Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and Cutler Bay, Lyft, Gerson & Schwartz PA law firm, Ryder, EWM Realty International, Wilson Law Offices, Small Time Movers and Fit2Run.

“This annual event serves as a critical call to action for the surrounding community,” said Janet Mondshein, executive director of the MADD Miami-Dade Affiliate and event co-chair. “Not only does it pay tribute to victims and survivors, but it educates the public about preventing future tragedies. Our goal is to work together to save lives and ultimately eliminate drunk driving.”

Joining this year’s event will be local leaders, law enforcement officials and members of the community of all ages. In addition to a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue helicopter, there will be police dog demonstrations by the Hialeah Canine Unit and the Miami-Dade Police Department’s “BatMobile” (which is used in drunk driving investigations). Walk Like MADD also will include music, games and rides for children and teens.

Participants, encouraged to register in advance, will walk or run the certified 5K course at Tropical Park in support of MADD’s mission and in tribute to loved ones.

MADD is a not-for-profit, grassroots organization that aids victims and families of victims of drunk driving and increases public awareness about this violent crime.
