Temple to celebrate Shabbat in a sweet and savory way

There isn’t anything sweeter than gathering with fellow congregants, friends and neighbors at a Friday night temple service all while devouring hundreds and hundreds of pounds of milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. Everyone will be able to get a taste of this delightful indulgence at Congregation Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom’s 22nd annual Chocolate Lovers Shabbat taking place on Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m.

The annual Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom Chocolate Lovers Shabbat service was the brainchild of a congregation member as a way to increase the number of attendees at services after the summer lull and the event continues to grow every year. The Chocolate Lovers Shabbat has been a popular event right from the start, especially attracting families with young children to the temple’s services.

Temple administrators are expecting more than 500 people to attend the special service on Sept. 5 and the event is open to the community free of charge. The temple is planning a display and tasting of more than 100 different chocolate candies. An abundance of homemade chocolate desserts such as chocolate cakes, pies, and chocolate-covered fruit and nuts also will be on display for sampling.

Congregation Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olom is a congregation serving both Conservative and Reform congregants. The temple is located at 9400 SW 87 Ave. in Kendall. For more information on the Chocolate Lovers Shabbat, call the temple office at 305-595-1500.
