The Shula Expressway (SR 874) bridges are being widened over Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street).

New bridgework construction on the Shula Expressway (SR 874) over Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street) in Kendall is due for completion by the end of the fall, according to the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX).

The $46 million improvement project between Bird Road and Kendall Drive rebuilding the Shula Expressway south of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) interchange is the last major link in of recent reconstruction work on both expressways in the Kendall area.

Other reconstruction widening SR 874 south of Kendall Drive to Florida’s Turnpike intersection near SW 152nd Street was completed during earlier phases of the project in 2010-12.

“Currently, the SR 874 project is 80 percent complete,” said Mario Diaz, MDX spokesperson. “All work is estimated to be completed by early 2014.”

Among the major items still to be completed are preparing paint finishes for noise barrier walls and installation of overhead signage while work continues on median widening throughout the project corridor.

New asphalt layers will finish the section between Bird Road and the SR 878 interchange north of Kendall Drive once heavy construction is completed.

Work also is continuing on bridge widening over SW 56th Street (Miller Drive) and SW 87th Avenue (Galloway Road) and C-2 Canal.

Project improvements were designed primarily to increase the capacity of SR 874’s mainline by adding an additional lane southbound (from SR 826 to SW 88th Street) and an additional lane northbound, between the Snapper Creek Expreessway (SR 878) north to the Palmetto Expressway.
