Burn and Fire Prevention SWAT Team visited dozens of Westchester homes

Commissioner Souto sponsored an event along with FPL called “Safer Homes, Fewer Burns” to help residents prevent electrical and fire injuries. Florida Power & Light Company, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the UM/JM Burn Center at Jackson’s Ryder Trauma Center Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, Commissioner Javier D. Souto, Fire Marshall Chief Arthur L. Holmes, Jr., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, FPL Elec­trical Lineworkers, FPL Energy Experts visited 50 homes in Westchester. The team of experts moved from house to house, sharing tips and advice that will help homeowners make improve­ments in the safety of their homes to avoid burn injuries.

The new program coincides with National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 7-13, 2012). To commemorate the occasion, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Commissioner Javier Souto have proclaimed Oct. 10 “Burn Prevention Day” in the County and this event is the first to recognize that proclamation.

Experts from FPL, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the UM/JM Burn Center provided the following services:
  • Counsel residents on safety hazards and how to ensure safety
  • Inspect and adjust water heater temperatures and insulation
  • Check smoke detectors, replacing equipment or batteries as required
  • Inspect fuse boxes, interior power outlets, power strips and extension cords
  • Inspect light fixtures and clothes dryers
  • Present each homeowner with a bin of fire preventative/safety items, including fire extinguishers, batteries, power strips
