Volunteer organization rallies support for overseas troopsMembers of a volunteer community service organization are asking the residents of Cutler Bay to show their continuing support for our men and women in the military overseas by participating in a special event on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Freddie Ambrose, head of Thinking of You Services, is inviting everyone to come to the fountain area by TJMaxx at Southland Mall between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on that day and help get a jump on the coming holiday season for the troops. “We are having our annual Christmas card writing event for our troops serving overseas,” Ambrose said. “Come join us. Let’s show our service men and women how much we care.”

Thinking of You Services has organized a greeting card drive for the past five years, and Ambrose said that even the simple act of sending a card to someone in the service that you don’t know tells them they are not forgotten, and it can have tremendous impact on their morale.

A not-for-profit organization, Thinking of You Services also sends cards for other holidays and birthdays, as well as sending care packages overseas. This is designed to “to improve the quality of life of our troops, their families, veterans, and other community members.”

Ambrose’s efforts resulted from what he called the need to fill a void that was described by veterans and servicemen and women, when in 2004 he and his wife, Sonia, began sending cards to those in the service so no one would feel neglected at mail call. The project has grown and continued over the years.
