Cheery classroom awaits youngsters up to six at Montessori
Now beginning its fifth year, the Petersen Montessori Academy of Doral provides a collection of learner-led strategies to build independent thinkers and motiviated learners, according to its founder, Melanie Peterson Jacocks, M. S.
Planning future expansion into elementary educational levels, the Academy currently enrolls children in ages from six months through six years, located in Suite 150 at 10395 NW 41st Street. The first and only Montessori School in Doral, Ms. Petersen Jacocks stresses a focus on the ‘whole child,’ noting that “while traditional programs are more concerned about abilities and achievement, Montessori programs focus on the child’s development in four areas: cognitive, psychological, social, and spiritual.
“To best serve your child in these development areas, Montessori groups children in age brackets of three years,” she explained. “This is a more natural way of learning and allows stronger relationships to form between teachers, parents and children.”

The Montessori method includes learner-led strategies to build independent thinking and motivated learning that is student-driven while fostering teamwork and leadership skills, she said. Classes help children to learn grace, courtesy and conflict resolution, valuing the depth of each child’s experiences and providing uninterrupted workshop time, assessed internally and through observation.
Melanie Petersen Jacocks trained under Beverly McGhee of Alexander Montessori School in 2000 and has since earned her Early Childhood Credential from the American Montessori Society, her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Master of Science in Montessori Elementary, both from BarryUniversity.
