Conscientious Development
Needed in Kendall’s Future
A wise political figure was contrasting the ideological differences between two groups of Americans and said, “Some of us live as if we were the last generation on earth and some of us live expecting our great-grandchildren to inherit our choices.” While not perfectly aligned to either side of that comparison, I do inform my choices with the future in mind.
West Kendall, Horse Country and all the unincorporated parts surrounding have a heritage and a potential. Growth has happened. Growth is happening every day. Some of the development has been conscientious, some of it is appalling.
As I begin to participate in the land use process, I will seek to honor the land and home owners already here. We need to carefully plan for a greener, cleaner and educated township. To me, that means never having to go very far to meet our common needs. It doesn’t mean ugly redundant strip malls littering every 100 feet of empty space. It means holding developers accountable for their promises.
Planning and promoting adherence to beautiful village and town models that reflect our own unique tropical tastes seems like a good idea. Making the most of innovative and efficient technology to support and maintain the ecosystem is important. If it were entirely up to me (and it’s not), we would spend more money and time bringing every home and every business up to the most environmentally conscientious standards for the 22nd century.
It is possible to live in harmony with nature without infringing on growth and without sacrificing the choices that land owners have already made. I will stand a faithful watch guarding both freedom and enterprise.
