Held every October and coordinated by the Americans for the Arts the National Arts and Humanities Month is the largest annual celebration of the arts and culture in the nation. Communities across the United States have joined together to recognize the importance of the arts and humanities in our daily lives.

Here in Homestead, Vice-Mayor Judy Waldman celebrated by giving a proclamation to the Children’s Gallery and Arts Center, Inc. at the next City Council meeting. This organization provides both individual and collective artistic opportunities to low income families in Homestead, Florida City, and nearby neighborhoods.

The Children’s Gallery and Arts Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created last year by a small group of professionals and artists with the main purpose of promoting visual and performing arts, as a way of giving a voice and choices to members in our community. The art programs provided by this center are designed to encourage children and families regardless of their circumstances to participate in art creation and observation. They provide economically disadvantaged children considered at-risk youths and others with special needs with developmental programs that integrate creativity and innovation during non-school hours. All of the programs are inclusive and contain diverse, creative activities designed to promote school retention, academic achievement, and working towards obtaining achievable goals. In addition to enriching their students through art education this organization also acts as a support network for local artists of all mediums.

Executive Director Natalie Prieto stated, “The Arts are great healers and educators due to their creative nature that can transform feelings of seclusion, segregation and separation into new feelings of bonding and connection to other people. We create a fraternity among families; we invite students to participate based on their creative interests, and we also offer people the opportunity to explore a new world of ideas. We would like to thank Vice-Mayor Waldman and the City of Homestead for their continued support and this wonderful recognition during National Arts and Humanities Month.”

Vice-Mayor Waldman stated, “The Children’s Gallery and Arts Center is providing an incredible service by fostering creativity, revitalizing our youth arts program, and attracting new visitors to our area. By supporting these types of organization and recognizing the importance of feeding a child’s imagination our country will remain a center of creativity and innovation. The Arts and Humanities are essential components of our children’s education and I’m happy to celebrate this fantastic program.”
