The Town of Cutler Bay now can get the word out about upcoming events and other items of interest to residents using its new Electronic Community Message Board.

Recently installed at the intersection of Marlin Road and Old Cutler Road, the special digital sign was part of the Old Cutler Roadway Improvement Project that was completed in January. Framed with decorative coral rock and placed in the Pineland Rockland Education Garden, the message board was designed to fit in with other coral rock features used throughout the road improvement project.

The idea for the electronic community message board grew out of a February 2009 report issued by the town’s Communications Advisory Committee.

The committee was created by the town council to help find better ways to keep residents informed about town functions. Input from the committee and others resulted in the project, according to Rafael Casals, town manager.

“I am very proud of the fact that we were able to incorporate the recommendations from the Communications Advisory Committee, the will of the town council, and the general public which participated in the design phase of the Old Cutler Roadway Improvements Project,” Casals said.

“The Community Electronic Message Board was strategically placed at an intersection which is traveled by and viewed by several thousand vehicles per day, making it highly visible to residents and commuters.”

Messages will be displayed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, visible to everyone using Old Cutler Road. Already, special events such as “Movie Night in the Park,” “Chili Day in Cutler Bay” and committee meetings have been displayed on the board, among other things.

“The announcements on the message board are created and managed remotely by the Town Clerk’s Office,” Casals said. “Additionally, town staff is working on the preliminary designs for a second community electronic message board, which will be located at the corner of Caribbean Boulevard and SW 107th Avenue, to enhance the span of communication within the town.”

Casals said that the new message board is just one more way — in addition to local print media, the town’s website, email lists and informational kiosks — to keep residents up to date on what’s going on within Cutler Bay.

“It’s really awesome,” said Cynthia Rogg, resident and owner of the National Karate Academy at 20435 Old Cutler Rd. “It’s cool. I really like it.” For information on how the electronic community message board works, call 305- 234-4262 or visit www.cutlerbay-fl.gov.
