Presented by The Black Archives and hosted by international poet and spoken word artist Rebecca “Butterfly” Vaughns, “Expressions” will feature an evening of poetic expression, live jazz and neo-soul music as we celebrate National Poetry month on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at The Historic Ward Rooming House Gallery, 249 NW 9th Street in Miami’s historic Overtown neighborhood. The event will include featured sets from local spoken word artists Amali and Germaine Coleman, open mic (poets must pre-register with the hostess) and live music by DJ Sco and Jody Hill’s Deep Fried Funk Band. Admission includes a taste of Overtown’s famous Jackson’s Soul Food Restaurant, offering fried chicken and waffles.

Commissioned by NBC, Amahl and the Night Visitors is one of the most beloved and widely performed operas in the world. Composed by Gian Carlo Menotti, this one-act opera was the first opera composed specifically for television in America, and was broadcast live annually from Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center beginning in 1951. The opera takes place near Bethlehem in the First Century, just after the birth of Christ.

You will learn how to weave sterling silver wire to form the double viking knit, then pull it through a draw plate to see the magic happen.
