South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens welcomes the return of the renown SOUTH FLORIDA JAZZ ORCHESTRA, with their big-sound for a BIG opening night. This is a “world-class” sixteen piece Big Band that compromises some of the best jazz musicians, studio musicians, and jazz educators in the South-East United States. Ceramic artist, Sandy Warshaw, opens her ceramic show in the Wirtz Gallery, 5750 Sunset Drive, during the South Miami Art Walk on Friday, October 11, 2013 from 6-9pm. The Wirtz Gallery is located inside the lobby of the First National Bank of South Miami with ample parking nearby. Exploding into the jazz world in 1971, Stanley Clarke was among the first bassists in history to master both acoustic and electric bass with equal virtuosity, headline tours and selling out shows worldwide. In addition to his solo career and his innovate film and TV scores, his collaboration with other legends like George Duke, Chick Corea, Jeff Beck and others has expanded the boundaries of contemporary jazz. The Harlem String Quartet, resident ensemble at the New England Conservatory of Music’s Professional String Quartet Program, is a cutting-edge modern classical group that proves capable of nailing Clarke’s complex charts and demonstrates great capacity for content-rich improvisation.

For members and guests of the South Florida Writers Association, Saturday, September 7, historian Ulrich Merten will present an illustrated program based on his book Forgotten Voices: The Expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe After World War II. Although Mr. Merten was born in Berlin, he and his family were political refugees from Nazi Germany before the war, and he grew up in the United States. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Pinecrest Library at 5835 S.W. 111th St., Pinecrest. Refreshments provided.

St. Louis Catholic Church is celebrating our 50th year anniversary in Pinecrest. On August 24 we begin St. Louis Feast Day Activities with a Mass at 5:30PM and the opening of our History Museum in the family center at 6:45PM. The community is invited to browse our museum and enjoy refreshements. The museum will also be open after all Masses on August 25th.
