HOLLYWOOD, Fla.—“Gen Silent,” the award-winning documentary delineating the increasing isolation of aging gays and lesbians seeking health and long term care, will be shown from 5-7:30 p.m. on May 2 at The Peninsula, 5100 W. Hallandale Beach Blvd., Hollywood, and is free to the public.

Co-sponsored by SunServe, the social service organization in Wilton Manors, and The Peninsula, an assisted living and memory care community, the film screening is a poignant documentary from award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Stu Maddux that asks six gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) seniors if they will hide their lives to survive.

The hour-long film illustrates what experts are calling an epidemic: LGBT seniors being so afraid of discrimination by caregivers or worse in long-term health care, they may go back in the closet. Over the course of a year in Boston, the filmmaker captured through intimate access, their lives as they share their personal experiences, feelings and concerns as well as their day-to-day and decisions.

For many LGBT seniors, the film offers a look into the additional aging issues they must contemplate when selecting a senior community or caregivers and creating a support system if their family has deserted them.

“We are so thrilled to be able to bring this critically- acclaimed documentary to the South Broward area,” said The Peninsula Executive Director Jonathan Sperber. “These are vital issues that those who are serving seniors need to be more cognizant of as well as the general population.”

Roundtable discussion with facilitators will follow the film.
