IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishings retailer, today announced that its future Miami-Dade store will open in Sweetwater, Florida at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2014. It will be the Swedish company’s second store in South Florida (Broward County’s IKEA Sunrise opened in 2007), fourth in the state and 39th in the United States. Customers can begin lining-up at the store on Monday, August 25, 2014 – 48 hours in advance of the doors’ opening on August 27 – and can learn of more grand opening plans and promotions at IKEA-USA.com/Miami.
“Construction work has advanced far enough to allow the interior build-up process and finishing details to be complete by August 27,” noted Selwyn Crittendon, store manager of the future IKEA Miami. “Now our primary goal is the final training of the more-than-350 local hires joining the IKEA coworker family.”
The 416,000 square-foot future IKEA Miami, with its nearly 1,500 parking spaces, is located on 14.6 acres adjacent to the Dolphin Mall, at the intersection of the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and Florida’s Turnpike, in the City of Sweetwater. The store will reflect the same unique architectural design for which IKEA stores are known worldwide, as well as significant sustainable building practices, including the installation of South Florida’s largest rooftop solar array, consistent with the company’s 90% solar presence atop its U.S. locations.
IKEA Miami will feature nearly 10,000 exclusively designed items, 44 inspirational room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children’s play area, and a 600-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features include a ‘Children’s IKEA’ area in the Showroom, baby care rooms, play areas throughout the store, and preferred parking.
In addition to more than 500 jobs created from construction, approximately 350 coworkers will have joined the IKEA family by when the new store opens. Diverse positions at this employer of choice include: home furnishings sales, interior design, customer service, safety and security, cashiers, maintenance, goods flow, receiving, warehouse and stock replenishment. Also, among its total coworkers, IKEA Miami offers more than 60 food service opportunities in its Restaurant, Swedish Foodmarket, Café Bistro and coworker cafeteria.
Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA has offered home furnishings of good design and function, at low prices so the majority of people can afford them. There are currently more than 350 IKEA stores in 44 countries, including 38 in the U.S. IKEA has been ranked in FORTUNE’s annual “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, Working Mother magazine’s annual list of “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” and Training magazine’s annual “Top 100.” IKEA incorporates sustainability into dayto- day business and supports initiatives that benefit children and the environment.
