DSA Chess Team Wins FSCL South Championship

DSA Chess Team Wins FSCL South ChampionshipOn January 10th, Divine Savior Academy’s High School Chess Team won the Florida Scholastic Chess League (FSCL) South Championship in the K12 Division. Additionally, the K3 team, comprised of DSA elementary students, also tied for the division championship, eventually taking home the second place trophy on tiebreaks.

Standout students at the tournament included DSA Senior Andres Bermudez, who won the 4th place individual trophy, and DSA 2nd Grader Sebastian Herrera, who won the 2nd place individual trophy in the K3 division.

Divine Savior Academy’s championship comes on the heels of wins in December at the National Chess Tournament in Orlando, Florida. At this nationwide tournament with 573 teams and 2000 participants, DSA won 3rd place in the 12th grade division, 5th place in the 8th grade division, and 8th place in the 5th grade division, with four students winning 2nd place individual trophies.

All of these wins speak to Divine Savior’s well-established chess program, run by Mr. Gilberto Luna II. A chess master, multiple National Championship winner, previous Programs Director for the World Chess Hall of Fame, and Senior Tournament Director, Luna was also named 2012’s Chess Coach of the Year for the State of Florida. He led DSA to its most prominent title in 2013: championship team of the Chess Super National Tournament in the K12 Under 1600 division.

“I’m so proud of our students, and I’m looking forward to the future of these bright, extremely talented players!” says Luna.

Luna is speaking of exciting tournaments on the horizon: the Florida Regional Chess Tournament and the Florida State Chess Tournament. At these tournaments, DSA students will compete against the best chess players from across the state, representing both their school and the City of Doral.

Divine Savior Academy serves Doral as the only private Christian academy in the city with over 600 students in its PreK to 12th grade programs. The school is currently constructing a stand-alone high school building and expanded sports facilities on its current campus at 58th Street and 104th Avenue. It will open for the 2015-2016 school year.
