DBC Sponsors World City Luncheon May 1

The Chairman’s Message

The City of Doral’s close proximity to both the Port of Miami and the MIA-Airport make it a prime location for international businesses. As a result, the City of Doral is home to over 3,000 trade and logistical businesses.

This is one of the reasons why the Doral Business Council (DBC) is proud to announce that it will be the presenting sponsor of the World City Luncheon on Tuesday, May 1 2014, with Keynote Speaker John Melle, the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative.

In addition to having the opportunity to connect with leaders of the international trade community, attendees will also receive a free publication of World City’s Miami Trade Numbers of 2014.

Did you know that the first World Trade Week occurred in 1927?

In was the fruition of Stanley T. Olafson, then Manager of the World Trade Department of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. Due to the increasing tide of isolationism in the United States after World War I, legislation such as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act passed and imposed the highest level of tariffs on imports at the time. To this day, some economists argue that the Tariff hike of Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act contributed to the magnitude of the Great Depression.

Mr. Olafson believed that something was needed to remind people of the importance of trade. As a result, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce began to host its yearly World Trade Week events. Soon thereafter in 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed and officially recognized the Third Week in May as World Trade Week.

Since then, the activities of the World Trade Week have expanded to World Trade Month. Various organizations, business leaders, and government entities host similar events throughout the United States.

Come join us as we help kick off World Trade Month in Miami with our own World Trade Month event. If you register for your ticket before April 17, you save $10 off your ticket or $100 if you purchase a table.
