Embarrassing moments! It was an important meeting at Cutler Ridge Middle School on the morning of Tuesday Oct. 9th, with school officials, Town of Cutler Bay officials, parents and Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman, Vice Chair of the Miami-Dade County School Board all there for a presentation on “Schools of the 21st Century.” A great topic, well-presented, but we hear that the 20th century made it’s presence known as the 50 year old school’s air conditioning was “absent from class” and all those distinguished and nicely dressed bigwigs were dripping from the heat. We’re pretty sure that “sweating with the oldies” is not what everyone had in mind, but like the troopers they are, everyone kept going and made it through to the end. But a reliable source in town government commented that it’s about time the run-down old school gets an “extreme makeover!” Or at least a new AC unit.
Ooooo…spooky! The Cutler Bay Haunted House will welcome all to a family event at
Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 S.W. 200th Street on Saturday, October 27 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Besides the Haunted House there’ll be a Costume Contest, “Track or Treat” Candy (given out to the kids at points around the field’s track), a “Spider” Egg Hunt, food and much more. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Cutler Bay Town Council is on Wednesday October 17th at 7:00 p.m. It will be in the Council Chambers at Town Hall, located at 10720 Caribbean Boulevard in Cutler Bay.
For an early Halloween treat, Miami- Dade County Commissioner Lynda Bell is presenting “Spooktacular Movie Night” on Friday Oct. 19 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Devon Aire Park, which is located at 10411 SW 122nd Avenue. There’s free popcorn and refreshments. Since it’s in the park, don’t forget to bring your blankets or lawn chairs for seating.
Hispanic Art event… Commissioner Bell also wants us to let everyone know that, working in conjunction with the County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, she is presenting “Hispanic Art Expressions Gallery Night” on Friday Oct. 26 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, Lab Theater. It’s located at 10950 SW 211 Street, Cutler Bay. “Join us for a reception as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an evening of art from across the Americas and meet the artists as they present their pieces to the public,” says Bell. Admission is free.
Another art event… Three mid-career artists with distinctive visions of abstract paintings will be featured in “Color, Form, Space,” an exhibit running now through January of next year at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries in Coral Gables at 169 Madeira Avenue. The background of the artists is as varied as their works: Bassmi, who paints under the single name Bassmi, is from Egypt and now lives in this country; Michelle Concepción is from Puerto Rico and lives in Germany; and Florian Depenthal is German and divides his time between Europe and this country. Calendar note! Florida Rock Stars presents the South Dade Food & Country Festival, October 27 at the Harris Field Pavilion in Homestead. The event helps raise awareness and funding for three local animal rescue organizations and features some of the finest Country bands in Florida, including One Night Rodeo, winner of the Greater American Country Award this year, Cecilia Lauren and the Ocoee River Band, and special guest, Homestead’s own, Jade Sanders. Gates open 4 p.m. and the show runs 5 – 11 p.m. rain or shine.
