South Dade Alphas Adopt Local Elementary Schools

The Brothers of the Iota Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. donated over 50,000 sheets of paper to two adopted local elementary schools. The recipients, Cutler Ridge and Ethel Beckford Elementary Schools, were selected from both community and fraternal recommendations. Copy paper has become a growing commodity at schools across the district. Impart to fiscal constraints in the school system, many funding resources for basic supplies have been cut. Teachers were asked to have students bring copy paper as a part of their school supplies. The teachers informed us that they go through a ream of paperwork a week, burning copies of text books that they don’t have full classroom sets of. In addition to copy paper, the chapter also donated bookbags, pencils, folders, and other related supplies. We received donations from the University of Miami William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, Costco, BJ’s, and Seminole Chapter #10 OES P.H.A. during our collection drive. Thanks to our sponsors, we were able to donate nearly $1,000 in school supplies. Our donation marks the commencement of a year round commitment to provide supplemental resources and support to the educators at our adopted schools.
