Members of the Town of Cutler Bay’s staff participated in the World’s Fair 2014 – Relay for Life of Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay to help raise money for the fight against cancer.

The event took place on Saturday, Mar. 1, on the field of Evelyn Greer Park in Pinecrest. The town’s entry was a Cancun, Mexico-themed booth complete with sombreros and was equipped with appropriate food such as award winning “Not My Daddy’s Chili” and more than 100 assorted burritos donated by Chipotle Mexican Grill. The opening ceremony was led by Cutler Bay Mayor Ed MacDougall.

“We have made progress in our battle against this dreaded disease,” said MacDougall. “Let us continue the fight, together.”

The TCB (Team Cutler Bay) booth had a “life of the party” cactus toss booth game and greeted visitors with cheerful enthusiasm. In all, the team raised more than $300 for the worthy cause, with all proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society in support of research to find a cure for bladder cancer.

“The town extends a very special thanks to their corporate sponsor, Chipotle, for their donation of over 100 burritos,” town manager Rafael G. Casals said in a postevent interview.

Relay for Life is an annual event that takes place in many cities across America, bringing together cancer survivors, those who have lost friends and relatives to cancer, caregivers and other individuals interested in finding a cure for cancer. It features special ceremonies and activities. Begun in 1985, teams form locally to compete for the cause and to raise funds for the ongoing research efforts.
