UM Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tourney to tee off Oct. 10

The UM Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Miami’s Hurricane Club have announced a partnership for the 22nd annual UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament to benefit the Hurricane Club Victory Fund, hosted by Brett Romberg. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables.

The tournament begins with registration at 11 a.m., including lunch provided by the Hole In The Wall Pub. Golfers get startedwith a 12:30 p.m. tee time on the 18 lush holes of the Biltmore Golf Course. Following the round, the awards dinner will take place in one of the historic Biltmore Hotel’s luxurious ballrooms. Entry fees include the golf, lunch and awards dinner, goody bag and golf shirt.

“We are excited to announce this partnership with the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame,” athletic director Blake James said. “Not only will this provide a great opportunity for Hurricane Club members and Canes fans to play golf with some Hurricanes greats across all sports, but it will raise money to support our current student-athletes who will be future UM Hall of Famers. We are looking forward to a great day of golf at the Biltmore on Oct. 10.”

The Victory Fund was established to raise revenue for the new student-athlete training table dining hall, lights for Greentree Field to be used by multiple teams, as well as the artificial football surface and the football “recovery zone” area.

Romberg, a member of the 2001 National Championship football team and the 2002 Dave Rimington Trophy winner as the nation’s best center, has graciously accepted an invitation to serve as the host for this year’s event. A three-time All-Big East selection, Romberg was named a consensus All America in 2002 and spent nine seasons in the NFL. He was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.

“It’s an honor to serve as the host for this great UM event and to know that the funds raised will help our current athletes makes it that much more special,” Romberg said. “I just hope my golf game is up to the task…I don’t want to embarrass myself.”

“This is a year of new opportunity for the UM Sports Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Tournament,” said K.C. Jones, president of the UMSHoF, a 2008 Hall inductee and two-time Super Bowl winner with the Denver Broncos.

“With our newly forged partnership with UM Athletics, we will be raising money for scholarships through the Hurricane Club Victory Fund. We are proud of this direct contribution to the university’s current student athletes and the next generation of UM Sports Hall of Famers,” he said. “As with all of our events, our golf tournament offers Canes fans a unique opportunity to interact with some of their favorite former Canes All Stars.”

Sponsorships for the golf tournament still are available for corporations and businesses.
