MIAMI-DADE COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES HAS ONCE AGAIN TAKEN THE JUNE 11 “JUST ONE DAY” NATIONWIDE NO KILL PLEDGE

Miami-Dade County Animal Services (Animal Services) has once again taken the pledge to participate in the annual nationwide “Just One Day,” June 11, No Kill awareness initiative. Every year on June 11, participating animal shelters nationwide take the same pledge not to euthanize any savable animals.

As a participating shelter, Animal Services is asking the community to help celebrate June 11, 2014 by taking advantage of waived adoption fees and rescue fees for all pets over four months old at the shelter located at 7401 NW 74th Street, Miami. Adopters will save on the cost of adoption fees, but more importantly, they can save the life of shelter pet. Pet adoptions include spaying/neutering, age appropriate vaccinations and microchip. Adoption fees for dogs over 35 lbs. will continue to be waived until August 31, 2014.

Animal Services will also hold waived fee pet adoptions from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street, Miami, FL.

“The June 11 date is significant because it was on June 11, 2001 that the first No Kill community was established in Ithaca New York’s Tompkins County. Since that time, the No Kill philosophy has gained momentum in many communities. It has helped us change the way we look at saving dogs and cats here in Miami-Dade County,” said Alex Muñoz, Director of Animal Services.

Since 2012, Animal Services has aggressively implemented No Kill programs that enabled it to save the highest amount of shelter pets in the history of the department. The save rate for dogs increased from 61 percent in 2010 to 77 percent in 2013. The save rate for cats increased from 18 percent in 2010 to 66 percent in 2013. Year to date Animal Services’ save rate is 84 percent for dogs and 72 for cats. The No Kill goal is to attain a 90 percent or better save rate.

Miami-Dade County Animal Services Department (Animal Services) provides care and refuge for over 27,000 unwanted dogs and cats. Every day, Animal Services staff and volunteers work diligently to find life-long homes for these abandoned animals by facilitating onsite adoptions, hosting off-site adoption at events and locations throughout the community, and working collaboratively with over 70 rescue organizations who share in our goal of a No Kill Miami-Dade County.
