The Coral Gables Community Foundation has established a $10,000 college scholarship fund for students in the Culinary Arts Program (CAP) at Coral Gables High School who wish to pursue a career in the culinary field. The CAP Scholarship will be awarded to the student(s) showing the greatest promise and interest in the culinary arts.

The check to establish the fund was to be presented at the Culinary Arts Program’s third annual gala dinner on Mar. 18 at The Dome Restaurant, 271 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.

“The Coral Gables Community Foundation has been a consistent partner of Coral Gables High School,” said Chef Mercy Vera, instructor, Culinary Arts Program. “They have engaged my students in their culinary event, the Tour of Kitchens, which included baking, serving and introducing them to local celebrity chefs and authors and have been generous to us as well.

“Other facets of our school that have benefited from the CGCF include the football team, Law Day participants, Pro-Chat attendees, college and career fair support, Gablettes sponsorship and scholarship recipients. They are true and loyal partners in our community.”

Money to establish the scholarship fund was raised through the Foundation’s annual Tour of Kitchens event. This is the second year that the Foundation has participated with the students in the Culinary Arts Program.

“Culinary students have a unique talent that is not always recognized through scholarship opportunities,” said Andria Hanley, executive director of the Foundation. “The money raised through our kitchen tour is a great start to this fund. We hope to be able to begin awarding scholarships in 2014.”

“We are proud to participate in this way, honoring exceptional hometown students,” said Carlos Garcia, CPA, current chair of the Foundation. “The Foundation currently administers five scholarship funds, and other youth-related programs that have provided close to a half million dollars in support.”
