The Coral Gables Museum, which celebrates, investigates and explores the civic arts, will present two cycling related exhibits in March: the third annual ARTcycle, an exhibit and public art installation that merges the Miami art scene with the Miami bike movement, and “The Underline: Make It Yours,” an educational exhibit that introduces visitors to the plan to redevelop and enhance the M-Path, the bikeway that runs beneath the Metrorail from Brickell to Dadeland. Both exhibits open on Friday, Mar. 6, and run through May 24.

The ARTcycle theme this year is “Cyclists Matter,” and its aim is to bring a clear public message that bicycling culture is important to Greater Miami and that cycling contributes positively to communities and should be embraced as a key component of positive urban development. Cycling enables people to travel from one place to another. And it helps foster a sense of community among people, who cycle for exercise, leisure and travel.

A jury composed of ARTcycle founders Giselle (Gigi) Delgado and Tachi Llamas, principal of The Street Plans Collaborative Anthony Garcia, Coral Gables Museum director Christine Rupp and director of programs Caroline Parker Santiago, chose to exhibit the work of 30 local artists after issuing a call for artists. Artwork was selected based on concept, execution, and alignment with this year’s theme. The entries consist of large outdoor sculpture, video animation, photography, painting, and mixed media.

“The Underline: Make It Yours,” exhibit explains the vision and progress behind the local movement to redevelop and enhance the M-Path. Complementing the exhibit is a bike tour of The Underline on May 17 led by Meg Daly, founder of Friends of the Underline.

This year’s featured ARTcycle artists are H. Allen Benowitz, Martin Casuso, Mariano Costa Peuser, Clara Echavarria, Axel Font, Tessie Globe, Danilo Gonzalez, Cristina De Guillot, Lauv Grosso, Holly A. Jones, Maria Carolina Keener, Rudolf Kohn, Teje La Araña, Beju Lejobart, Carolina Molina, Janet Mueller, Anabel Peicher, Maria Esther Quintana, Edgar Ramos, Gioconda Rojas, Raquel Rub, Benjamin Saint Maxent and Adrien Blanc, Alejandra Salazar, Cesar Santaló, Aida Tejada, Jasna Tomasevic, Antonio Ugarte, Arlette Varon, Lucy Varon and Barbara de Vries.

In addition to ARTcycle and “The Underline: Make It Yours,” the museum is presenting several bike-related activities through May. These include different bike tours, such as the popular Bike and BBQ event, where cyclists bike from the museum to Matheson Hammock Park for a fun barbecue with fellow riders on Mar. 15, and a special bike tour of Coral Gables with artist Federico Carosio on Apr. 19.

From March 23 to 27, the museum will host “I Bike Coral Gables!” Spring Camp for children ages 5-12. They can bring, decorate and ride their bikes (or scooters) all week long at the museum. Activities include bike safety and repair lessons, bikethemed exhibit tours, artist talks, bike relay races on the Museum Plaza and field trips to local parks where they can spring into action on their self-propelled vehicles.
