The next few months are packed with events.
The GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club is hosting an indoor air-conditioned garage sale at its clubhouse on Saturday, Oct. 25, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m. For a small price, the public is invited to reserve a table and clean out unwanted items before the holidays. Coral Gables Woman’s Club also will be hosting a great Halloween Party on Oct. 31. After taking out the kids, don a costume and join the fun at the clubhouse, located at 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. A $20 admission includes entertainment, a costume contest, prizes and food with a cash bar. For more information, visit www.coralgableswomansclub.org.
To wrap up September events, one thousand or so folks started the morning of Sept. 27 with the Step Out to Cure Diabetes Walk at Marlins Park. The Diabetes Walk added some great features for walkers including having the entire race inside the ballpark. Everyone took home a souvenir with a professional photo taken at a Step & Repeat set up.
Publix Pharmacy was one of the many sponsors there distributing free diabetes related product samples while the Community Newspapers team celebrated a birthday with a non sugarless cake. Oddly enough, people started lining up to taste that as well. For those being good diet wise, following the race there was a cooking demo with healthy choices, fruits and veggies.
The Falls Auto Show took place later that evening, once again sponsored by Rotarian Fred Baddour and his company CRB Geological, with proceeds going to charity. This event typically is held on the third Saturday of every month at 8700 SW 113 St. For the past several months, the event has raised more than $1,000 to support veterans programs at the Veterans Administration Hospital where Gables Rotarians bring in food and prizes to the recreation hall every month for bingo.
Many of the same Coral Gables Rotarians will be selling beer for tips at The Great Grove Bed Race in Coconut Grove on Nov. 8. This annual fun-filled day of bed racing has something for everyone at every age. You can be sure the regular participants like Shell Lumber and Hardware and Barracuda Bar will be on hand for the exciting competition that combines creativity with athleticism or lack thereof. Admission is $5 for adults and kids 12 years and under are free.

Speaking of Rotary, members of the Rotary Club of Miami Brickell, recently received a check from the Rotary Club of Coral Gables to support Brickell’s Lotus House project that will give rise to a District matching grant. For those unfamiliar with Lotus House, it is a unique resource center and residential facility serving 110 homeless women and children daily in the heart of Miami’s historic Overtown area.
This is not a typical shelter but one that is a place of healing and transformation with a holistic, gender specific and innovative format that serves to empower women. To date, more than 1,000 women and children have been sheltered there with more than 80 percent of those who have completed the program having transitioned to safe homes outside the shelter system.
Miami’s Continental National Bank is celebrating its 40th anniversary by partnering Amigos For Kids in a joint fundraiser event: $40K for 40 Years. Amigos for Kids is a nonprofit with programs that promote positive parenting and wellness for local youth. Now until Nov. 22, Miami residents’ donations will be matched by Continental National Bank with funds and in-kind contributions. Donations can be made at all Continental National Bank locations, at participating retail partners, or by visiting www.continentalbank.com.
