Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) representation, will offer free SSDI eligibility screenings at the inaugural South Florida NAMIWalks event, “Walking for Mental Health.” The walk begins at 8 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in four U.S. adults has a mental illness. NAMI programs include support, education, research and advocacy for all persons living with and affected by schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety disorders.
Recovery is possible, but individuals who cannot work due to these conditions may be eligible for SSDI benefits. Individuals who are under retirement age, have paid into the system through FICA taxes during their careers, and are unable to work for at least 12 months or more due to a physical or mental illness may be eligible for SSDI.

SSDI is an important resource for former workers, but the application process can be overwhelming. More than two-thirds of people who apply for SSDI are denied at the application level. Allsup experts will be available Saturday to answer questions about the SSDI application process and provide eligibility screenings.
