TimberNook founder and therapist to speak at Castellow Fireside Chat

The Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department will host a free Fireside Chat and Outdoor Nature Experience for families on Sunday, Feb. 22, 4-6 p.m., at Castellow Hammock Preserve, in the Miami EcoAdventures Center, 22301 SW 162 Ave.

Guest speaker Angela Hanscom, TimberNook founder and pediatric occupational therapist, will discuss her work with “nature therapy” and its importance in raising healthy and happy children. The discussion will conclude with a marshmallow roast around the campfire. There also will be plenty of opportunities for walking through the park’s hammock areas and viewing wildlife.

TimberNook is an internationally recognized nature-based developmental program that champions the benefits of children playing outdoors. The program was established to educate families, teachers and the community about the critical links between nature, play and child development. Its curriculum weaves together the therapeutic benefits of nature with activities that inspire children to think creatively, accept challenges and learn from failure.

Hanscom holds a master’s degree in occupational therapy and an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology (the study of movement), with a concentration in health and fitness. Her work with TimberNook has been featured extensively in numerous publications and blogs. She also is the author of a forthcoming book, Balanced and Barefoot, which discusses the effects of restricted movement and lack of outdoor time on overall sensory development in children.
