Sapphire

Fifteen years after the publication of Push, and one year after its Academy Award-winning film adaptation, Precious, author Sapphire gives voice to her heroine’s son in a new book, The Kid. The author will present her new book on Wednesday, July 27, 7:30 p.m., at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami.

This free event is a collaboration of the acclaimed Florida Center for the Literary Arts (FCLA) at MDC, Books & Books and Casa Valentina.

The Kid brings readers deep into the life of Abdul Jones, Precious’ son. After his mother’s funeral, the 9-year-old is left alone to navigate a world in which love and hate sometimes hideously masquerade. Forced to confront unspeakable violence, his history and the dark corners of his own heart, Abdul claws his way toward adulthood and an identity he can stand behind.

“Sapphire’s work is of great cultural importance; we are honored to be working with our partner, Books & Books, to make this reading open to as large an audience as possible,” said Alina Interián, FCLA’s executive director.

Sapphire is the author of two collections of poetry and the bestselling novel Push. The film adaptation of her novel, Precious (2009), received the Academy Award for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress, in addition to the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance. In 2009 she was a recipient of a United States Artist Fellowship.

Free tickets for this event are available at Books & Books Coral Gables, Miami Beach and Bal Harbour locations. Limit two tickets per person. Reserved, priority seating is available with pre-purchase of The Kid.

The location is the MDC Wolfson Campus Chapman Center, Building 3, Room 3210, 300 NE Second Ave.
