Miami’s Brickell area just got sweeter as the first Gelato Nostro gourmet gelateria in the U.S. celebrated its grand opening with a welcome to the neighborhood soirée on May 11 featuring live music, an open bar and light bites provided by area restaurants complemented by Gelato Nostro’s gourmet gelato.

Miami’s Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff were on hand to officiate the cake cutting welcoming Gelato Nostro to the Brickell neighborhood.

Partners Oscar Piccolo, Hector Amici and Marco Marchi, who run a chain of eight gelaterias throughout Italy under Gelato Nostro’s original name “La Scintilla,” are behind the Gelato Nostro concept. The trio plans to open more Gelato Nostro locations in South Florida including one in Midtown Miami, one in Coral Gables or Coconut Grove, and one at the Village at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach.

The sleek and sophisticated design of the upscale gelateria consists of tile imported from Italy called Bubble Fantasy by Porcelanosa which serves as the backdrop for the sink and water fountains, and the countertops are made of quartz composite. There is an oversized picture of Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn from the classic 1953 movie Roman Holiday adorning one of the interior walls.

As its tag line states, Gelato Nostro is much more than ice cream — it is gourmet Italian gelato in more than 30 distinctive flavors including Brickell Bacio, Fig Caramel, Dulce de Leche, The Godfather and Mascarpone, just to name a few. Handcrafted daily from the freshest most natural ingredients, the gourmet gelato has 30-40 percent less fat than regular ice cream and has no artificial flavors or preservatives.

Gelato Nostro offers creamy gelato cakes created as works of art by Gelato Nostro’s culinary artisans and pastry chefs. A myriad desserts, empanadas, and quiches can be enjoyed with Nespresso coffee, cappuccino, latte, and gourmet teas. There also is a hot fudge station where only you say “when” or “basta” as hot fudge compliments gelato in a cone or sundae, but unlike Caesar who proclaimed, “Veni, Vidi, Vici,” Gelato Nostro says, “Come, Taste, Enjoy!”

Gelato Nostro is located at 1111 SW First Avenue on Brickell in Miami. The hours are from 8 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Saturday.
